Just preparing the combine for harvest, not long now!
About Trumpington Estate
Opposite Grantchester Meadows, the land on the Trumpington side of the River Cam is Trumpington Fen, owned by the Pemberton family. Back in 2011 a project to establish a wetlands reserve of over 30 hectares was carried out in conjunction with Natural England and the Environment Agency under a Higher Level Stewardship agreement. The main […]
Despite being on the edge of one of the most high-tech cities in Europe, Grantchester is still a rural village, surrounded by farmland that is actively cultivated; and long may that continue. The farming year reaches its peak with the harvest; an intense four-month period from July to October, 7 days a week. The two […]
Farming The recent weather has been ideal for our type of crop production and we are around 3 weeks ahead of where we would expect to be at the time of year. The wheat is coming into ‘ear’ and looking luscious, the oil seed rape is setting seed and the sugar beet is growing at […]
Farming All systems are go for one of our busiest periods in the year as we aim to get the crops off to the best start possible. Spring is 3 weeks ahead of where we might anticipate and crops are waiting to burst into life when day length catches up with the current mild temperatures. […]
Crops Luck and fair weather played a large part in our successful harvest this year, although it wasn’t without high drama with the demise of one of our combine harvesters (see below). Planting of the 2014 crops has proceeded exceedingly well with good soil condition, plenty of moisture and the opportunity to repair the soil […]
In an average year we would have expected to harvest oilseed rape crop (approx. 1/4 of the crop) around a month ahead of the wheat giving us a bit of a head start on the main harvest and a fairly distributed harvest and cultivation period. This was not an average year and, given the late […]
Crops Now that spring has arrived three weeks late, the crops are romping away. Around Grantchester mostly wheat can be seen with some oilseed rape towards the M11. The slow start to the growing year will put harvest times into August instead of July for the oilseed rape and late August for the wheats. After […]
Over the farmers hedge – Spring at Trumpington Farm Company Now that the long awaited spring weather has finally arrived, we are watching the crops romp away. The main visible crops in Trumpington will be the wheat towards the M11 while on Trumpington Fen we have spring beans emerging and some oil seed rape bursting […]
Crops The weather has been against us in past few months leading to poor crop growth. Oilseed rape established sufficiently before autumn, whereas the wheat has struggled. We were forced to plant late, in poor conditions and, apart from a brief spell around Christmas, it has been cold and wet since. With the additional presence […]
Welcome to Trumpington Farm
The 1300 hectare Estate, with Trumpington Hall at its centre, is still privately owned. Although agriculture is still very much at the heart of the Estate, in recent years the Estate has diversified to include residential and commercial property, and enterprises such as DIY livery yards, fishing syndicates and a public house.
I very much hope that you will find this website useful and will enjoy this beautiful part of Cambridgeshire should you decide to visit.
