James Norton and Robson Green in action on ‘Grantchester’ set

The River Cam and Bourne Brook to the south of Cambridge and Grantchester Meadows are unique locations that can be used as film locations. They have featured as the backdrop for period dramas and documentaries in the past, including the BBC’s last rivers series. Fans of Doctor Who will be interested to learn that an episode was filmed on the Meadows back in the eighties.

During the last few years a variety of scenes from the very successful ITV production of ‘Grantchester’ has been filmed on Trumpington Estate farmland. For the first series, the Estate became part of the action as Cantelupe Farm’s large empty grain stores were used for props, wardrobe and makeup and the tractor storage made way for cast and crew trailers and the catering truck. Two of the farm staff became part of the crew, moving camera equipment onto Trumpington Fen for scenes on the River Cam and some of the period vehicles into Grantchester Meadows.  More recent episodes have involved digging a grave and other interesting activities!
